Linux and Solaris

It just struck me that the download pages for Linux & Solaris might reveal a certain something about the projects they promote. Or maybe not, just a thought .. really I’m not trying to start a flame war.

From kernel.org:

“The latest stable version of the Linux kernel is:  2.6.25.1

  1. Sorry that’s a bad comparison. You are comparing a kernel with a distribution. While it is extremely difficult for anyone to do anything with the OpenSolaris kernel without using their distribution, the different audience requires a different style.

The people who go to kernel.org are all programmers, while OpenSolaris.com will include many end-users.

But it wasn’t me who decided to call the distribution and the kernel by the same name.
