The QS22 is the newest <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_microprocessor\">Cell processor<\/a> based blade server, sporting the new <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_microprocessor#PowerXCell_8i_Variant\">PowerXCell 8i<\/a> chip, and up to 32 GB of memory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/QS22#QS22\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7222\" title=\"IBM QS22\" src=\"https:\/\/michael.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/wp-content\/mpe\/uploads\/2008\/06\/qs22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because the QS22 can support larger amounts of memory, Linux needs to enable the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iommu\">IOMMU<\/a>, whereas on previous blades that was optional. For some workloads this could lead to a performance loss, so I spent some time early this year working on a <a href=\"http:\/\/git.kernel.org\/?p=linux\/kernel\/git\/torvalds\/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=99e139126ab2e84be67969650f92eb37c12ab5cd\">solution<\/a> which avoids the IOMMU overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Although he&#8217;s too modest to mention it, Jeremy maintins <a href=\"http:\/\/git.kernel.org\/?p=linux\/kernel\/git\/jk\/spufs.git;a=summary\">spufs<\/a>, which is the key infrastructure in the kernel which enables the Cell processor&#8217;s power &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_microprocessor#Synergistic_Processing_Elements_.28SPE.29\">the SPEs<\/a>. If it wasn&#8217;t for Benh, who also works with us in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canberra\">Canberra<\/a>, the QS22 probably wouldn&#8217;t even boot. And as of this year we&#8217;ve also had Mark, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_kids_on_the_block\">NKOTB<\/a>, working on Cell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_Roadrunner\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7223\" title=\"Roadrunner\" src=\"https:\/\/michael.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/wp-content\/mpe\/uploads\/2008\/06\/roadrunner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As of this week <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_Roadrunner\">Roadrunner<\/a>, powered primarily by the QS22<strong>, <\/strong>is the current world&#8217;s fastest computer, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/top500.org\/list\/2008\/06\/100\">Top 500<\/a>. It&#8217;s also the first computer to break the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FLOPS\">petaflop<\/a> barrier&#8221;. That means it can do 1 quadrillion calculations per second, that&#8217;s the same as 1 million billion or 1000 trillion .. or <strong>a lot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention it runs <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linux\">Linux<\/a> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Jeremy mentioned, the IBM QS22 was released a few weeks ago.
