{"id":7027,"date":"2005-05-31T00:02:12","date_gmt":"2005-05-30T14:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michael.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/2005\/05\/31\/all-mocked-up\/"},"modified":"2007-10-25T13:54:52","modified_gmt":"2007-10-25T03:54:52","slug":"all-mocked-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michael.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/2005\/05\/31\/all-mocked-up\/","title":{"rendered":"All mocked up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.symphonyos.com\/desktop.html\">These GUI mockups<\/a> by some guys working on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.symphonyos.com\">&#8220;Symphony OS&#8221;<\/a> (which is just a Linux distro it seems) are <strong>really<\/strong> cool.<\/p>\n<p>Although I love KDE, I really don&#8217;t think you can argue that the default desktop layout is optimal or even well thought out. It looks like Windows, which might be useful for some people, but there&#8217;s lots of lost oportunities to actually <strong>do better<\/strong> than Windows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.symphonyos.com\/desktop.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/mpe\/uploads\/2005\/05\/31\/all-mocked-up\/mezzo1.png\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0em 1em 1em; float: right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The default GNOME layout is a bit better, it makes better use of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fitts_Law\">Fitt&#8217;s Law<\/a> by putting the task bar along the bottom of the screen. Although I still can&#8217;t get my head around spatial Nautilus.<\/p>\n<p>The SymphonyOS mockups make a lot of sense. Using the corners as targets is so obviously a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think the Trash is worth an entire corner, I&#8217;d put it under documents, and use that corner for something more useful.<\/p>\n<p>I also don&#8217;t think Logout and Shutdown should be in the Computer section. It lures inexperienced users into a corner they otherwise might best avoid.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;d also be interesting to see how well it all scales, ie. how does it look when you&#8217;ve got 15 windows open.
