Jk makes the following vapid, baseless and libelous accusations on last.fm in response to "How do the charts work?":

So, the charts work like this:
faxed, our fearless last.fm Canberra group leader, goes to the CD store and asks for the 15 CDs that have been on the shelves for the longest. You know, the type that are in prominent display next to the “20 polka hits of 1984″ and “elevator classics” albums, below the poster of the latest Home and Away tie-in CD.
Then, because his job at the corn factory doesn’t pay him much, he has to run out of the store without paying for the CDs. This is usually followed by a 5-minute faxed-gets-chased-by-security-guards event, but he almost always makes it out safely. We’re all trying to forget about that time that he didn’t.
He then takes the CDs to his loungeroom, and lays them out in a 5-by-3 grid. Standing to one side, he’ll fill his mouth with as many potato crisps as is possible. One of his flatmates is charged with the task of punching him squarely in the abdomen, causing the chips to burst out and scatter all over the CDs. The album with the most chips on it goes at number one on the charts, the CD with the next-highest chip density will go at second, and so forth. He’ll then patiently clean up the mess of CDs and potato crisps, in order to do the same task next week.
So there you go.
I would never stand near a Home and Away poster! Not to mention that I have abs of steal!

Latte Man vs McMansion Man
Interesting article (for a change) in the Australian the other day, thanks to Chris for the pointer. I just love the imagery.
On the plus side I guess, at least as far as the Right is concerned, I just can’t exist … where does a latte-sipping, beer-drinking, bike-commuting, backyard-cricket-playing, book-reading, meat-eating, university-educated bogun fit?

To round out this installment, and yes there’s more after this, we have just a few more pics from Nicole. Nothing phalic in here, but a few excellent sunrise shots, and a good example of what the heat does to some people.

Next up we have Sparky’s shots, a classy selection. Well classy except for all the shots of Gilby eating a sausage, telling.
If you can see past the meat you’ll notice members of the Woodford Eleven hanging at the bar, did anyone ever get the score from their game against The Herd?

We start this year’s somewhat belated Woodford photo orgy with the photomagical stylings of Mr Crowe. There’s a few extra bonus shots from Ben’s travels, including an excellent one of his toes, don’t miss it!

Never got round to posting these, things were a bit busy over in USA land, and since with Christmas and such. Anyway, here they are.
There’s some shots from our trip out to Blanco, where we visited the cool little Real Ale Brewing Co. in their basement micro-brewery. Thanks to Jeff for organising the tour.
On the night of the ice storm Andrea braved the elements to drive us downtown to check out the crazy Christmas lights. Photos are from the camera phone, so a bit crappy, but you get the idea – crazy Christmas light fever.
There’s a couple of half drunken (not me of course) shots from a party at Ryan’s friends place, which was a lot of fun. We’d been hoping for some Frat-boy Keg Party action, which didn’t quite eventuate, but it was a great night anyway, especially the bit where me and Mikey stole Ryan’s car.
By request, I swear, a few shots of the hotel and surrounds, not a bad lil’ place.
That’s about it, a few random cultural insights and such to round out the set.
Oh, I nearly forgot, some rockin blurry anonymous shots from 6th St.

Three words, WORLD’S STEEPEST STREET. Pass me that bike …

Thanks to the ever intrepid Anton, we even have a movie of the death-defying descent, check it out (Warning: may lead to motion sickness).
And yes, we may be crazy, but we did ride up as well as down.

Simply for presenting a half decent talk at LCA, and more importantly because the LCA organisers are champions, I got to go for a chopper ride over Dunedin before heading home the other Sunday.

It was awesome. I’d never been in one of those crazy gravity defying things before, but always thought it must rock, and it did. I want one. Where’s that astronaut guy when you need him … or at least his cheque book.
Lots of photos, some good, some rushed, all from a damn helicopter! …

You too could look this good, just drink Noroviraideā¢!
Amoungst all the frivolity, which is much more interesting blog fodder, there was in fact a conference on in Dunedin.
And if you’re into that kind of thing, it was a pretty rockin conference, but I won’t bore ya’ll with the details. Well sort of …
My talk went down without major incident, and some people even came, which was good seeing as I was up against Van the Man who “saved the internet”. And I’m sure he did, his talk (which I saw later) was freakin’ awesome.
A few shots that didn’t fit elsewhere …

As part of the serious LCA 2006, a book was auctioned. A book made valuable by it’s history, by the list of dignitaries who signed it (although slightly devalued when I scrawled on it) and by the fact that it was being auctioned for a good cause.
The book is a copy of John Lions’ Commentary on UNIX, a famous book in computing circles. The cause is to raise enough money so that UNSW can establish a chair in John Lions’ honour.
After much drinking, yelling, a boat race, plenty of general faffing and so on … the book went for AU$10,000, to a “cartel consortium” of UNSW types.
Unfortunately the book alone was not quite enough to justify $10,000, so a few extra tidbits were thrown in by various luminaries. And I have the photos to prove it …
